Watch our May 15, 2022 adult Sunday school class by Tom Cantor (Matthew 23:1-12).
Tom Cantor taughtfrom Matthew 23:1-12 for the Sunday school class. First, He gave the background. To spoke of all the people who had challenge Jesus and then how Jesus had challenged them.
Next, Jesus spoke to the multitude about the people who had challenged him. Tom noted that a problem with the scribes and Pharisees is they were not living what they taught.
Tom Cantor, a Jewish believer in the Lord Jesus Christ, connected this passage with his experiences in evangelism including Jewish evangelism. He talked about his experiences with the Jewish community and some of their deep interest in tefillin. He also connected the teachings here to the sayings of a Chinese emperor from thousands of years ago. This helped make a point in Matthew 23:11.
One of the closing points that Tom made was that the command in Matthew 23:11 “but he that is the greatest i’m on you shall be your servant“ is one that Jesus lead by example. He referenced the epistle to the Philippians 2:5-11. This passage showed that the Jesus Christ had the exalted position of being “equal with God” that he took on “the form of a servant.“ This is what the Lord calls us to do in Matthew 23:11.
