Joel 3 – Watch our June 19, 2022 Worship service, sermon by Tom Cantor from Joel 3

Watch our June 19, 2022 Worship service. It includes prayers, singing, announcements, special music, and a sermon by Tom Cantor from Joel 3.

Tom Cantor taught the last chapter of Joel this Sunday. First he read Joel chapter 3. Tom noted in 3:2 His “plead for my people” reveals the heart of God. He connected this to Jesus‘s mission to bring Jacob back to him (Isaiah 49:5). Jesus was sent to “bring him back, bring him back home.” Tom connected this to a song from Les Miserables. He said the tone of this song revealed God‘s heart for Israel.

Tom noted that the name Joel means Jehovah is God, and at the second coming Israel will acknowledge “Jehovah is my God” (Zechariah 13:9). He also referred to Zechariah 12:3 and 2:8 to indicate the importance of Israel to the Lord.

Next, he likened the Lord’s judgment to a murder case that took place near one of his facilities in Ethiopia. He used this as a sort of parable. I thought this was especially powerful and insightful.

Tom also connected Joel 3:9 to Exodus 3:13, Exodus 15:3, Psalm 2:2-3, Psalm 24:7-8, and Revelation 19:11-15.

Tom worked his way through the chapter showing the Lord‘s love for Israel, his judgment on the nations, and how he would restore Israel at the second coming. He connected  Joel to many related passages. He also related this to Jewish evangelism and evangelism in general presenting the gospel and God’s call to all sinners (John 1:29).

Widows

Tom Cantor started by reading Matthew 23:14. Then Tom covered three main points. First, he spoke of the prayers and promises to widows in the Bible. Tom reference passages like psalm 68:5, Luke 7:11, Deuteronomy 14:28, and the widows mite.

Prayer

Next, he spoke of pretense in prayer. He noted that there are good and bad ways of praying. We shouldn’t pray to show off or use vain reputations. He gave the rosary as an example of vain repetitions. Tom compared prayers like the way his wife would write letters. She would take great care in what she said. He gave three points from her letter writing that might help prayer. First, be clear. Second, be to the point. Third, use the best words. He referenced passages of people who believed what they would receive (Matthew 20:29–34; Matthew 9:27–30) and those who struggled with belief (Mark 9: 20–24).

Judgement

Finally, Tom addressed the last part of the verse about the “greater damnation.” He gave some biblical descriptions of hell, and pointed out no one needed to go there. He critiqued “fatalistic predestination” (Calvinism) as being not true and that everyone has a chance to go to heaven. Tom pointed out that hell was not created for us but for the devil and his angels (Matthew 25:41). Next, he stressed how Christ died for everyone and there is provision for everyone. He used to do an Old Testament passages including those about Jesus being “the Lamb of God” for the world (John 1:29) and the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:21). Why hell? They choose to hold onto their sins. He critiqued Calvinism and TULIP using passages like Isaiah 53:4 and Romans 5:8, talking on “the unbelievable love of God.”

Tom closed referring to the Gopsel, “A person has to fight his way into Hell”, and God‘s will that all be saved.

Watch our June 12, 2022 Worship service, sermon by Sam Burton (John 11)

Watch our June 12, 2022 Worship service. It includes prayers, singing, announcements, special music, and a sermon by retired missionary Dr. Sam Burton on the raising of Lazarus (John 11).

Retired missionary Sam Burton taught on the raising of Lazarus by the Lord Jesus (John 11). First, Tom P. Read portions from the Chapter. Then Sam gave a short background on the location, Bethany. He included the ascension (Luke 24:50-51). He also pointed out that this was a place of fellowship and rest for Jesus.

Sam then went on about John 11. He noted that the sickness was for the glory of God. By raising Lazarus, the Lord showed that he was “the resurrection and the life.” Sam pointed out that Christ resurrection and ascension is our “Victory! Joy!” By it we have hope and joy. He then took the Lord‘s question to Martha about “Do you believe this?” and applied it to the listeners. Do you believe this?

Sam then went on to point out that our purpose was to live for the glory of God, too. He gave two lessons to be learned. The first was “Wow!”, about the marvel of the event. The second was the importance of resurrection.
