The Wessex Gospels – Read John 3:16 in English from 1000 years ago!

“The Wessex Gospels (also known as the West-Saxon Gospels) are a full translation of the four gospels of the Christian Bible into a West Saxon dialect of Old English.” These were translated between 990 A.D. and 1175 A.D. LINK

Here is John 3:16 in Old English from the Wessex Gospels, “God lufede middan-eard swa þæt he sealde hys akennedan sune þæt nan ne for-wurðe þe on hine ge-lefð. Ac habbe þt eche lyf.”

Here is John 3:16 from the King James Bible, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

See how many words you can guess. I found it helped when I read it out loud. Also, “þ” in old English is the “th” sound. (I had to look that up.)

The Lord of the Rings fans will recognize the third word, the hyphenated one!

Adventures with Grandma by Joelee Chamberlain

We have free copies at the Chapel of “Grandma” Joelee’s new book “Adventures with Grandma: Pretend visits to the Tabernacle and the Israelite camp.”

Grandma takes the grandsons on “let’s pretend visits” to the Tabernacle of the Lord and to the camp of the children of Israel as they wandered in the wilderness. Each visit is bookended with homey scenes of cookies, Grandma’s dog, and either sharing with Mama and Daddy about what they learned or talking with Grandma about it as they eat lunch together. In the visit to the Tabernacle, they respectfully stand outside the courtyard, peer into the courtyard, and ask questions of a friendly Levite and a helpful priest as to what is inside the Tabernacle and what is done. In the visit to the camp, they ask questions of a kind Israelite as they watch the camp gather manna, prepare to move, and then move following the pillar of cloud. Both of these stories are connected to the Gospel.

This is based on two of her “Children’s Bible Audios-Stories for Kids.” Her audios are available on SermonAudio, iTunes, Google podcasts, Stitcher, and any more podcast sites

Sunday Hymn – The Family of God

“The Family of God”, words by William J. Gaither & Gloria Gaither and music by William J. Gaither, was an part of our worship service last Sunday.

It was played as introductory music and was our closing hymn. In between, the sermon by Sohrab Ramtin was from I Thessalonians 2:7-12, “Parent Pictures of Ministry”, about how the apostle Paul was like a mother and father to the Thessalonians.

I don’t know if our CCLI license allows us to put the lyrics here, as it is still copyrighted, but we can share it as our closing hymn on YouTube HERE

Local Apologetic/Evangelistic Outreach by David Hall

David Hall runs an apologetic/evangelistic outreach in Balboa Park. He does not go to the Chapel, though his daughter and her family did before they moved north for more musical training – https://www.delamottestrings.com

Here’s a link to an update about his latest outreach https://www.facebook.com/1226810861/posts/10226976149929508/

I (Paul) have had the opportunity to help out with this outreach on a couple of occasion. It’s really great. It includes evidence from creation and the Bible to point people to Christ. It is a unique outreach in that has evidence from creation, prophecy, typology, and legal evidences all pointing people to the Good News of the Lord Jesus Christ. But after all, isn’t that like the kind of reasoning the apostles did in the book of Acts?

If you’re ever in Balboa Park on a Saturday, you can stop by at the Bea Evenson Fountain area https://goo.gl/maps/ZRwbW1CVGSy5neja6

You’ll see a bunch of posters set up with pictures from science and prophecy. They are pictures like the ones on these free hand outs –

Friday Night Hymn – I Love to Tell the Story

On Friday family nights, we sing a few hymns. The Gospel (Good News) of our Lord Jesus Christ has also been called The Greatest Story Ever Told, His-story, Perfect Myth and Perfect Fact (in “Myth Became Fact” by C.S. Lewis), and in one of the hymns we sang,“I Love to Tell the Story”, it’s called The Old, Old Story.

I Love to Tell the Story
Words by A. Katherine Hankey, Music by William G. Fischer

1. I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and His glory, of Jesus and His love;
I love to tell the story, because I know ’tis true,
It satisfies my longings as nothing else would do.

Chorus:
I love to tell the story,
’Twill be my theme in glory,
To tell the old, old story
Of Jesus and His love.

2. I love to tell the story, more wonderful it seems
Than all the golden fancies of all our golden dreams;
I love to tell the story, it did so much for me,
And that is just the reason I tell it now to thee.

Chorus

3. I love to tell the story, ’tis pleasant to repeat,
What seems each time I tell it more wonderfully sweet;
I love to tell the story, for some have never heard
The message of salvation from God’s own holy Word.

Chorus

4. I love to tell the story, for those who know it best
Seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest;
And when in scenes of glory I sing the new, new song,
’Twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long.

Chorus
