Sunday Hymns – Holy, Holy, Holy
Last Sunday, for the first hymn we sang “Holy, Holy, Holy.” This hymn, especially verse three, is drawn from Revelation chapter 4 (verse 4, 8-10). The call of “Holy, Holy, Holy” was also cried by the seraphim in Isaiah 6:3. The author, Reginald Heber, seems to connect this call with the three persons of the Trinity in the first and last verse. This song was a good way to start the worship service.
Holy, Holy, Holy
words by Reginald Heber & music by John Bacchus Dykes
- Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed trinity! - Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
which wert, and art, and evermore shalt be. - Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye of sinfulness thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity. - Holy, holy, holy! Lord God almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth, and sky, and sea.
Holy, holy, holy! Merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed trinity!
